Background

As one of the world’s largest seafood manufacturers, sustainability is essential for Thai Union - its business depends on healthy oceans. Hudson Sandler was appointed to help develop and launch Thai Union’s global sustainability strategy, SeaChange®, to multiple stakeholders.

Challenge

Global seafood supply chains are incredibly complex, from vessels and manufacturing, to importers and retailers. In an industry closely monitored by leading NGOs and global regulators, Thai Union needed to address a range of sustainability challenges, create a vision for ocean stewardship and inspire collaborative efforts to drive meaningful change.

Method

Hudson Sandler developed a proactive communications programme to inform, educate, and engage a wide range of audiences, with messaging around four key pillars: Safe and Legal Labour; Responsible Operations; Responsible Sourcing and People & Communities.

We have championed key milestones on Thai Union’s sustainability journey, from its landmark agreement with Greenpeace in 2014 to the recent launch of the #GhostGearReborn campaign to help combat marine plastic. Building strong working relationships with key commentators, bringing to life Thai Union’s activities, advocacy and partnerships, and showcasing its progress have all helped maintain momentum.

Outcome

Thai Union’s work has been widely recognized: they’ve topped the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) food category two years running; they’ve been on the FTSE4Good Index for three years consecutively; and they are regular advocates to governments and across the industry.
